What is life if not one fucking relentless billing cycle?

What is life if not one fucking relentless billing cycle? The seemingly gratuitous profanity has a purpose here. It does the job of breaking my fall into the pit of rage.

I am more convinced than ever before that the extinction of the human race will be caused by bills. It is time for Hollywood to make an epic monster-disaster movie starring a mammoth bill as the monster ravaging through countries and devouring everything in its path. Finally, when there is nothing left to devour it eats itself.

Perhaps you can sense by now that I don’t like bills. Who does? I don’t know of anyone who celebrates the arrival of monthly bills by hosting a party. Let me know if you know someone who loves bills. I would throw a party for that person and run up a bill.

The thing with bills is that there is no resting on your laurels. It is not as if you pay one set and you are done. The next set is already on the way. Facilitating this onslaught is a combination of communication technologies. They call you, email you and text you. They also send you letters. Pretty soon your bills will follow you on drones. There is no escaping them. I can picture tiny drones firing bill missiles at citizens as they run desperately for cover. If they manage to dodge the drone strikes, they confront the bill monster stomping and thumping its way through the streets. I think I am practically writing a plotline for a movie.

We do not realize it but the modern world is already in the unbreakable grip of a lifelong billing cycle. The billing industrial complex is real and has been upon us for a long time. For instance, mobile phone companies, in my case AT & T, text subscribers sanguinely announcing that our bills are ready to be paid. It is as if that announcement must be greeted with exultation of joy.

Utility companies wield the eternal threat of disconnecting your power and water supply if you do not pay in time. Cable companies have automated disconnection at a specific time past your payment deadline. They do not even have to manually turn the service off. The computer does it. Mortgage companies throw you out of your home after default. The internal revenue department can go into your bank account and clean it out to recover your taxes. In short, we are all completely 100 percent beholden to the Bill. I sometimes think bills will continue to generate even after our sun has ballooned into a red giant.
