Whether or not Philae successfully lands on Comet 67P later today, these images are spectacular for what they represent in terms of space exploration. The comet is named after its discoverers Klim Churyumov and Svetlana Gerasimenko, two Kiev-based astronomers who spotted the comet in 1969 on a photographic plate. It is four kilometers in diameter and is regarded as a small object.
